You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide. A faulty boiler, flue or ventilation system can allow this dangerous gas to build up indoors.

What happened in Tashkent?
Six people died in a private house in Mirzo Ulugbek district on 25 October. Media reports citing the Prosecutor General said two others were hospitalised in serious condition. Preliminary findings pointed to a boiler that did not meet safety requirements and a gas connection made without the required technical conditions. The investigation continues; final causes have not been established.
Recognise the signs and act
Headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and confusion can signal CO poisoning. Sleeping people may not notice the danger. If you suspect exposure or a CO alarm sounds, leave immediately for fresh air and call 103 or 112. Tell responders you suspect CO. Do not return until professionals say it is safe.
- Have a qualified professional inspect the boiler, flue, ventilation and gas connection.
- Keep ventilation openings clear and never use faulty equipment.
- Install and test a dedicated CO alarm according to its instructions.
- Do not use a gas oven for heating or run a grill or generator indoors.
A methane alarm does not necessarily detect CO. Check that a combination alarm specifically lists CO. If you smell fuel gas, leave, avoid switching electrical devices on or off, and call 104 from outside.
