PRIME DT-70-12-12 copper cable lug
⚡ The PRIME DT-70-12-12 is a power cable lug designed for reliable termination of a 70 mm² copper conductor. Once correctly crimped, it provides a strong contact that allows the cable to be bolted to a busbar, terminal, circuit breaker or other electrical equipment.
The lug consists of two principal sections:
- a tubular barrel receiving the stripped cable conductor;
- a contact palm with a hole for bolted fastening.
The lug must not be squeezed with ordinary pliers. A suitable mechanical, hydraulic or battery-powered crimping tool with a 70 mm² die is required.
🔎 Understanding DT-70-12-12
- DT — tubular power cable-lug series;
- 70 — nominal copper-conductor cross-section of 70 mm²;
- 12 — contact-hole diameter intended approximately for an M12 bolt;
- 12 — stated internal diameter of the tubular barrel.
⚠️ Confirm the final dimension from the actual marking or by measurement, as the internal diameter of DT-70 lugs may vary between manufacturers.
✅ Main advantages
- designed for a 70 mm² copper cable;
- crimp connection;
- contact hole for an M12 fastening;
- suitable for power circuits;
- provides a large electrical contact area;
- helps reduce heating when correctly installed;
- prevents conductor strands from spreading;
- convenient for cable-to-busbar connections;
- does not require soldering when correctly crimped;
- suitable for professional electrical installation.
🏭 Applications
- main distribution boards;
- electrical switchboards;
- busbar systems;
- circuit breakers;
- switch disconnectors;
- contactors;
- transformers;
- voltage stabilisers;
- generators;
- electric motors;
- industrial equipment;
- solar and backup power systems when permitted by the design.
🔩 M12 bolted connection
The hole in the contact palm allows the lug to be mounted on an approximately M12 bolt or stud. Before installation, check the actual hole diameter, bolt size, contact-pad width, washer dimensions, tightening torque and material compatibility.
A 12 mm hole and an M12 thread are not exactly the same specification. A clearance hole normally includes a small allowance so the bolt can pass through freely.
🧰 Required installation equipment
- 70 mm² copper cable or conductor;
- cable cutter;
- insulation-stripping tool;
- crimping pliers or hydraulic press;
- die suitable for a 70 mm² lug;
- heat-shrink tubing or other insulation;
- suitable bolt, nut and washers;
- torque wrench where tightening torque is specified.
🛠️ Crimping procedure
- Fully isolate the electrical supply and verify that it is dead.
- Cut off any damaged or oxidised end of the cable.
- Remove insulation to match the length of the lug barrel.
- Do not cut or damage individual conductor strands.
- Insert the conductor fully into the barrel.
- Place the lug in the correct crimping die.
- Make the required number of crimps according to the tool instructions.
- Check that the conductor cannot move or pull out.
- Cover the transition to the insulation with heat-shrink tubing.
- Clean the contact palm and install the lug with the bolt.
- Tighten the connection to the specified torque.
The die must match both the cable cross-section and the lug design. Insufficient crimping may cause overheating, while excessive deformation may damage the lug and conductor.
⚠️ Do not
- use the lug on an aluminium conductor without an approved method;
- crimp it with ordinary pliers, a hammer or a vice;
- remove conductor strands to make the cable fit;
- use a smaller cable to fill an oversized barrel;
- use an unsuitable die;
- allow insulation into the crimping zone;
- attach the lug to a dirty or oxidised busbar;
- operate the connection with a loose bolt;
- perform installation while energised.
🧲 Metal compatibility
A copper lug is intended for a copper conductor and a copper or compatible contact surface. Direct copper-to-aluminium contact may cause galvanic oxidation.
For aluminium cable, select an aluminium or bimetallic lug specified by the design. Suitable products can be found in the cable fastening components section.
✨ Surface finish
Copper lugs may be supplied bare or tin-plated. Tin plating is a thin protective layer that helps reduce copper oxidation.
The presence of tin plating on this PRIME version must be confirmed from the product appearance, marking or supplier documentation.
📦 Package contents
The standard supply includes one PRIME DT-70-12-12 copper cable lug. The bolt, nut, washers, heat-shrink tubing and crimping tool are purchased separately.
📌 Summary
The PRIME DT-70-12-12 is designed for professional termination of a 70 mm² copper cable and bolted connection to electrical equipment. Correct crimping with the appropriate die creates a strong joint with a large contact area.
Before installation, confirm the actual barrel diameter, surface finish and compatibility of the crimping die.
