Description

GPRS data-transmission module for EX18 and EX518 electricity meters

📡 The GPRS module for EX18 and EX518 is a communication device designed to transmit electronic electricity-meter readings automatically to a remote server or automated metering platform.

It is compatible with:

  • EX18 — a single-phase electronic electricity meter;
  • EX518 — a three-phase electronic electricity meter.

📲 Operating principle

The electricity meter measures energy consumption and stores its data internally. The GPRS module reads the information through the RS-485 interface and sends it through a GSM/GPRS mobile network to the metering server.

  • the EX18 or EX518 measures electricity consumption;
  • the module reads the data through RS-485;
  • the information is transmitted through the mobile network;
  • the server receives and stores the data;
  • the user views readings in an AMR or dispatch application.

📶 GSM/GPRS transmission

The module uses a mobile network to transmit small data packets. This is convenient at sites without wired internet access.

Operation generally requires:

  • an active SIM card;
  • GSM/GPRS coverage;
  • correct APN settings;
  • server address and port;
  • registration of the meter in the metering platform.

Confirm whether a SIM card is included. Cellular service is normally paid for separately.

🔌 RS-485 interface

The module communicates with the electricity meter through the industrial RS-485 serial interface.

Installation must observe:

  • correct A and B polarity;
  • the manufacturer’s wiring diagram;
  • permissible cable length;
  • screening and grounding requirements;
  • communication speed;
  • the meter’s network address.

🔐 DLMS protocol

EX18 and EX518 meters use specialised communication protocols. The manufacturer specifies DLMS TCP/IP for GPRS communication and a DLMS-family protocol for the RS-485 port.

📊 Data that may be transmitted

  • accumulated active energy;
  • reactive energy;
  • tariff-zone readings;
  • voltage;
  • current;
  • power;
  • power factor;
  • date and time;
  • load profile;
  • power-failure and restoration events;
  • diagnostic information.

The exact available data depends on the meter version and metering software.

🏢 Automated electricity metering

The module can operate as part of an automated meter-reading or electricity-metering system.

  • reduces manual meter-reading visits;
  • reduces data-entry errors;
  • accelerates reporting;
  • enables remote consumption monitoring;
  • compares consumption across periods;
  • allows several sites to be monitored centrally;
  • provides access to archived data.

🌡️ Operating conditions

The stated operating-temperature range is −10 to +45 °C. The module should normally be installed inside a protected electrical enclosure.

📡 Mobile-signal quality

A metal electrical cabinet may reduce mobile-network signal strength. Communication should be tested before final installation.

Where signal strength is low, it may be necessary to:

  • change the module location;
  • install an external antenna;
  • place the antenna outside the metal cabinet;
  • use a SIM card from another operator;
  • verify APN settings.

✅ Key advantages

  • compatible with EX18 and EX518;
  • automatic transmission of meter readings;
  • RS-485 interface;
  • GSM/GPRS communication;
  • DLMS protocol support;
  • supports single- and three-phase meters;
  • reduces manual meter-reading requirements;
  • integration with automated metering systems;
  • suitable for remote sites;
  • communication cable included;
  • one-year official warranty;
  • Uzstandard certificate.

🏭 Applications

  • private houses;
  • apartments and residential complexes;
  • shops and offices;
  • industrial facilities;
  • warehouses;
  • business centres;
  • municipal facilities;
  • transformer substations;
  • electrical distribution panels;
  • automated electricity-metering sites.

📦 Package contents

  • GPRS module for EX18 and EX518;

The SIM card, mobile tariff, server and software may not be included in the standard package.

🔧 Installation recommendations

  • disconnect the electrical supply before installation;
  • verify compatibility with the exact meter modification;
  • connect RS-485 according to the wiring diagram;
  • do not reverse the A and B terminals;
  • configure the meter address and communication speed;
  • install an active SIM card;
  • enter the mobile operator’s APN settings;
  • configure the server address and port;
  • check GSM signal strength;
  • perform a test transmission;
  • compare remote data with the meter display;
  • install the module inside a protected electrical enclosure.

⚠️ Confirm before ordering

  • exact EX18 or EX518 modification;
  • firmware compatibility;
  • connector type and wiring diagram;
  • module supply voltage;
  • power-supply unit inclusion;
  • supported GSM frequency bands;
  • supported mobile operator;
  • antenna type and inclusion;
  • SIM-card format;
  • whether the SIM card is included;
  • compatible AMR server;
  • software and licence requirements;
  • DLMS communication settings;
  • remote-configuration capability;
  • enclosure protection rating;
  • dimensions and mounting method;
  • exact package contents.

⚠️ Important: the module will not begin transmitting data merely after the cable is connected. The SIM card, network parameters, electricity meter and server must be configured correctly.

⚡ Installation and configuration should be carried out by a qualified electrical specialist.
