This category contains natural-gas meters for apartments, private houses, cottages, shops, restaurants, boiler houses, industrial facilities and other sites. You can choose anything from a compact residential model for a single gas cooker to a higher-capacity device for multiple gas appliances and commercial consumption.
A gas meter measures the volume of gas consumed and helps maintain an accurate record of expenses. For official billing with a gas supplier, the device must meet the requirements of the servicing organisation and must be correctly selected, installed and accepted for operation.
🏠 Gas meters by installation location
- 🏢 For apartments — compact models for a gas cooker, oven and other residential appliances;
- 🏡 For private houses and cottages — devices for properties with a cooker, boiler, gas water heater or similar equipment;
- 🏭 For businesses and organisations — higher-capacity models for commercial and industrial facilities;
- 📊 For internal metering — devices used to monitor consumption on a separate section or item of equipment.
📐 G1.6, G2.5, G4, G6, G10 and G16 meter sizes
The letter G and the number beside it identify the gas meter size. The size is associated with the meter’s flow range and capacity. The more gas appliances operate simultaneously at a property, the higher the permitted flow of the meter will generally need to be.
- G1.6 and G2.5 — primarily for low residential consumption, such as a single gas cooker;
- G4 — a common option for an apartment, cottage or small house;
- G6 — for houses and small commercial properties with higher consumption;
- G10 — for private houses, organisations and properties with several gas appliances;
- G16 — for high-consumption sites, boiler houses and small industrial facilities.
Important: the number after the letter G should not be treated as the exact maximum flow for every model. The actual minimum, nominal and maximum flow rates must be checked in the technical documentation of the specific meter.
⚙️ Mechanical and ultrasonic gas meters
Mechanical diaphragm meters measure gas volume using internal measuring chambers. This is a widely used and understandable design that may be supplemented with an electronic module, display, modem and shut-off valve.
Ultrasonic meters determine flow by measuring the travel time of an ultrasonic signal through the gas stream. They have fewer moving measuring elements, while the electronic system may provide data display, diagnostics and remote reading transmission.
The measurement principle alone does not make one meter best for every situation. Selection depends on operating conditions, the required flow range, compatibility with the metering system, gas-supply organisation requirements and the available budget.
📡 Gas meters with a modem
Modern models may be supplied with a GSM/GPRS modem and SIM card. The modem sends readings to a compatible automated commercial gas-metering system.
An automated gas-metering system collects readings, helps monitor consumption and may be used by the utility supplier for remote interaction with the meter.
Before purchasing an online gas meter, check:
- whether the model supports the system used by the local gas-supply organisation;
- whether the modem is included or purchased separately;
- whether a SIM card is installed and its service plan is paid;
- whether separate configuration and device registration are required;
- whether mobile communication is stable at the installation site.
The presence of a modem does not guarantee automatic connection to the gas supplier’s system. The device, SIM card, transmission protocol and software platform must be compatible.
🛑 What is the shut-off valve used for?
Some gas meters contain an integrated shut-off valve. It allows the gas supply to be closed automatically or remotely under conditions provided by the system, such as an emergency, abnormal parameters, outstanding payment or a command from the servicing organisation.
After the valve has operated, do not attempt to dismantle the device or force the gas supply open. Service restoration must be performed in accordance with the gas-supply organisation’s rules and applicable safety requirements.
🔍 How should you select the right gas meter?
- List all gas appliances. Include the cooker, oven, water heater, boiler and any other devices.
- Determine the total consumption. Add the maximum consumption of all appliances that may operate simultaneously.
- Choose the meter size. Select G1.6, G2.5, G4, G6, G10, G16 or another option with sufficient flow capacity.
- Check the connection diameter. The thread or flange size must correspond to the design and pipeline.
- Consider the direction of flow. Models may be designed for left-to-right, right-to-left or universal gas flow.
- Determine the installation location. Check the permitted temperature, humidity and suitability for outdoor installation.
- Confirm whether a modem is required. Remote metering requires compatibility with the active automated system.
- Check the documentation. Confirm the availability of the passport, certificate, verification details and required approval documents.
📏 Why should you not select a meter by pipe diameter alone?
The same connection diameter may be used on meters with different flow capacities. Conversely, models of the same meter size may have different connection dimensions.
Selection should be based primarily on the maximum combined consumption of the connected equipment. Pipe diameter, pressure, flow direction and installation dimensions are checked additionally. A meter that is too small will operate under excessive load, while an unnecessarily large meter may measure very low consumption less effectively.
🧾 Verification, certification and documents
Official metering requires not only suitable technical specifications but also the proper device documentation. Depending on the model and purpose, the following may be required:
- a product passport or operating manual;
- a certificate of conformity or type approval;
- details of initial metrological verification;
- the serial number and production date;
- documents for the modem, SIM card and integrated valve;
- an installation and commissioning certificate.
The verification interval and operating rules may depend on the model, owner category and applicable requirements. The verification period must therefore be checked in the documents of the specific gas meter rather than determined from the general category description.
🧰 What else may be required for installation?
Depending on the package contents and installation location, the following may be required:
- threaded connectors, nuts and gaskets;
- gas valves and other shut-off fittings;
- a filter to protect the meter from contamination;
- mounting brackets and fasteners;
- a cable or equipment for data transmission;
- a protective enclosure for outdoor installation;
- sealing components.
Related components can be selected in the Plumbing Supplies section. Before payment, always confirm which connection components are already included with the gas meter.
⚠️ Safety and installation
Gas equipment must not be installed independently without the required expertise and authorisation. Installation errors may cause a gas leak, fire, explosion or incorrect operation of the device.
Installation, leak testing, sealing and commissioning must be performed by specialists authorised to work with gas systems. Before purchasing, it is advisable to approve the model with the project engineer or servicing gas-supply organisation.
Do not block ventilation openings, relocate gas pipelines independently or install the device in a location that does not meet the manufacturer’s and project requirements.
